How to Get to La Fortuna from San Jose

Getting to La Fortuna is pretty straightforward, but it does require a bit of travel time since it’s located a few hours outside of San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Here are your main options:

  • Car: Driving to La Fortuna is one of the easiest ways to get there, especially if you’re comfortable behind the wheel. The drive from San José is about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. If you’re renting a car, you’ll likely take Route 1 and then Route 142 to La Fortuna. Keep in mind that some of the roads, especially the last stretch into La Fortuna, may be unpaved, but it’s manageable with a 4×4 vehicle.
  • Shuttle: If you’re not keen on driving, private or shared shuttles are a great option. These door-to-door services are comfortable and convenient, picking you up directly from your hotel in San José and taking you straight to your accommodation in La Fortuna. Shared shuttles are more affordable but take a little longer since they may make stops along the way to pick up other passengers. We decided to go with a private shuttle which was super convenient and I’d definitely recommend it.
  • Plane: If you’re in a hurry and want to skip the long drive, you can book a short flight from San José to the nearby La Fortuna Airport (Aeropuerto La Fortuna). The flight takes about 25 minutes, and from the airport, you can catch a taxi to the town center. This option is more expensive, but it’s quick and scenic if you want to skip the road travel.

The Best Time to Visit La Fortuna Costa Rica

The best time to visit La Fortuna is usually considered to be during the dry season, which runs from December to April. This is when you can expect the most sunshine, clear skies, and warm temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, waterfall visits, and ziplining.

However, don’t be afraid of visiting during the green (rainy) season from May to November. While this season brings more rainfall, it’s usually concentrated in the late afternoons. If you plan outdoor activities for the morning you can usually avoid a lot of the rain. We visited during the rainy season and found the rain was fairly predictable and didn’t ruin any of our plans! Also, the lush scenery will be at its most vibrant, waterfalls are often more impressive with the extra water, and you’ll face fewer crowds and lower prices.

Transportation in La Fortuna

Getting around La Fortuna is pretty easy and there are a few options depending on your comfort level and how adventurous you want to be. Here are a few options:

1. Renting a Car:

Renting a car is probably the most convenient way to explore La Fortuna at your own pace. It gives you the freedom to visit the hot springs, waterfalls, and surrounding areas without depending on anyone else. The roads are pretty well-maintained, though some may be gravel, and if you’re heading into more remote areas you’ll want to make sure you have a 4×4.

2. Shuttles & Taxis:

Taxis are available in La Fortuna, but they’re not always as readily accessible as in bigger cities. However, many hotels and tour companies can arrange a shuttle for you to popular spots, or you can simply call a taxi. They can also take you to and from nearby attractions.

3. Public Bus:

If you’re looking for an affordable option, the public bus system is an option. The buses are reliable and relatively inexpensive, though they may take longer than other forms of transportation. You can catch buses that go to and from the city center and surrounding towns like Arenal and Monteverde.

4. Tours & Excursions:

Many excursions and activities in La Fortuna include transportation to and from your hotel. For example, if you’re going on a guided tour to places like the Arenal Volcano or the hanging bridges, most companies will offer a shuttle service to pick you up from your accommodation. This is what we did for most of our activities just so everything was taken care of and we didn’t need to worry about it.

Language and Currency

Language: In La Fortuna, like the rest of Costa Rica, the official language is Spanish. However, while Spanish is the primary language, you’ll find that many people in the tourist industry (like hotel staff, tour guides, and restaurant workers) speak at least some English, especially in popular tourist spots. Still, it’s helpful to know a few basic Spanish phrases to make your experience smoother. Simple things like “gracias” (thank you), “por favor” (please), and “¿cuánto cuesta?” (how much does it cost?) can go a long way!

Currency: Costa Rica’s official currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC). However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas like La Fortuna. Many businesses will quote prices in dollars, and you can pay with U.S. bills, but you’ll usually get change in colones. That being said, even if you’re only spending 3 days in La Fortuna it’s still a good idea to carry some colones for smaller purchases or if you’re heading to more remote spots. ATMs are available in La Fortuna if you need to withdraw cash, and most credit cards are accepted at restaurants and hotels, but always check with the place you’re visiting beforehand.

  2. Swimwear: Don’t forget your swimsuit for the hot springs, waterfalls, and any water activities like rafting.
  3. Rain gear: Costa Rica is known for afternoon showers, so bring a light rain jacket or poncho and an umbrella just in case.

  5. Flip-flops/sandals: Perfect for relaxing at your hotel or lounging at the hot springs.
  6. Sunscreen: Even if it’s cloudy, the sun can be intense, especially near the equator.

  11. Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated during your hikes and tours. Tap water is safe to drink in most places, but having your own bottle is always handy.

3 Days in La Fortuna, Costa Rica: What to Do and See

The ideal number of days in La Fortuna really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for, but generally speaking, 3 to 4 days is a great amount of time to explore the area. There’s so many things to do in La Fortuna, but you’ll still be able to see most of the highlights. Keep reading to see my recommended 3 day itinerary for La Fortuna!

Day 1: Explore Arenal Volcano

Hike Around Arenal Volcano National Park

There’s no better way to start your Costa Rican adventure than with the star of the show: Arenal Volcano. Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most famous sights, and for a good reason, it’s stunning. This massive volcano looms over the La Fortuna area, surrounded by lush jungle, old lava fields, and steamy hot springs.

It was dormant for hundreds of years until 1968, when it finally erupted and destroyed the town of Tabacon. After that first eruption, Arenal became one of the most active volcanoes in the world, constantly putting on a fiery show with eruptions and glowing lava at night. Photographers would constantly travel to the area for almost guaranteed epic shots of eruptions and lava flows.

Unfortunately, the show stopped in 2010 and the volcano is now in a resting phase. Luckily, there’s still a ton to do in the area. The volcano is part of Arenal Volcano National Park, a protected area filled with biodiversity, hiking trails, and stunning views.

Since we only had 3 days in La Fortuna, we decided to book a guided tour to hike around the volcano’s trails and see the park. It was a great opportunity to see the lava trails up close as well as wildlife. Our guide pointed out several different animals during our hike that we would have never noticed!

Swim at La Fortuna Waterfall

Next, head to La Fortuna Waterfall. This stunning cascade is a must-see, with a dramatic 70-meter drop into a shimmering pool below. When you arrive there, the hike down involves over 500 steps, but it’s definitely worth it. Once you reach the bottom, you’ll find yourself at the edge of a pool with water crashing down.

You can swim in the area around the outer part of the pool but not directly underneath the waterfall for safety reasons. It’s a super refreshing swim (the water was colder than expected!) but you definitely have to at least take a quick dip in! Make sure to bring a change of clothes as well.

Walk Across Hanging Bridges at Mistico Park

Lastly, you can explore the Hanging Bridges in Mistico Park. This spot is perfect if you’re into nature, stunning views, and just a touch of adventure. The park has a network of trails and—you guessed it—suspension bridges that take you right into the heart of the rainforest canopy. It’s like a front-row seat to Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity.

The park has 16 bridges, six of which are hanging bridges that sway gently as you walk across. They range from ground-level to high above the jungle, giving you different perspectives of the forest. Some of the higher bridges are a bit nerve wracking to cross if you are afraid of heights, especially as they start to sway, but the views are worth it! Walking through feels like stepping into another world with towering trees, vibrant flowers, and all kinds of wildlife. You might spot monkeys, sloths, toucans, frogs, or butterflies—and that’s just scratching the surface.

Day 2: Adventure and Arabica

Zipline Over the Rainforest

If you only have 3 days in La Fortuna, you definitely cannot miss ziplining through the rainforest. La Fortuna is home to some of the best zipline tours in the country, and the canopy tours here are next-level, with cables stretching high above the treetops and some lines reaching crazy speeds. The zip lines vary in length, with some shorter ones that let you ease into the experience and others that send you flying for what feels like forever. We went with a course that had 7 ziplines but there are also options to do 12 ziplines! The highlight? Ziplining with a direct view of Fortuna Waterfall on one of the longest zip lines!

Coffee and Chocolate Tour

Costa Rica is known for its high-quality coffee, and chocolate has been a cherished treat in Central America for centuries. It’s definitely worth it to go on a tour that combines the best of both, giving you a deep dive into the process of turning humble beans into two of the most loved indulgences.

You’ll start by learning about coffee, from how the beans are grown in volcanic soil to the meticulous process of drying, roasting, and brewing. Many tours let you get hands-on, so you can try your hand at grinding beans or brewing your own cup of Costa Rican coffee.

Next comes chocolate, often referred to as “food of the gods.” You’ll learn about the cacao tree and its significance in indigenous cultures. Most tours include a demonstration of how cacao pods are harvested, fermented, and turned into chocolate. Of course, there’s plenty of tasting involved, from raw cacao to rich, handcrafted chocolate. We ended ours with a cup of freshly made hot chocolate! If you love coffee, chocolate, or just learning about where your favorite treats come from, this is a must-do in La Fortuna.

Day 3: Rafting and Relaxing

White Water Rafting

If you’re looking for more adventure, white-water rafting in La Fortuna is an adrenaline-filled way to experience Costa Rica’s wild beauty. The area is surrounded by incredible rivers like the Balsa, Sarapiquí, and Toro, each offering a mix of thrilling rapids and calm stretches where you can soak in the scenery. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned rafter, there’s something for everyone, with routes ranging from family-friendly Class II rapids to heart-pounding Class IV.

Most tours include professional guides who not only help you navigate the river but also share interesting facts about the local ecosystem. They’ll make sure you’re geared up with helmets, life jackets, and paddles, so all you need to bring is your sense of adventure!

Relax at a Hot Spring

After all that action, it’s time to end your 3 days in La Fortuna by treating yourself to a relaxing soak in La Fortuna’s famous hot springs. Even though it’s in a resting phase, the Arenal Volcano is the superstar behind La Fortuna’s hot springs thanks to its geothermal activity and underground heat.

Here’s how it works: rainwater and groundwater seep deep into the earth near the volcano. As the water gets closer to the magma-heated rock layers underground, it warms up—sometimes to scalding temperatures. This heated water then flows back up through cracks in the earth to form the thermal pools you soak in today. Depending on the location, the water can pick up minerals like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur along the way. The mineral content in the water is believed to soothe muscles, improve circulation, and leave your skin feeling silky smooth. But honestly? Even without the health perks, the peaceful ambiance, natural surroundings, and warm water make it an unforgettable experience.
