When most people think of a trip to Costa Rica, they imagine endless sunny days on pristine beaches or hiking through lush rainforests under a bright blue sky. And sure, the dry season is great—but let me let you in on a little secret: visiting Costa Rica during the rainy season (May to November) is an entirely different experience, and honestly, it might just be better.

I’ll admit, when I first considered visiting during the rainy season, I hesitated. Rain all day, every day? Muddy trails? No thank you. But after spending some time there during the “green season” (as the locals like to call it), I became a convert. If you’ve been dreaming of Costa Rica but haven’t considered the rainy season, here’s why you should—and why I’ll happily go back during that time again and again.

The Lushest Landscapes You’ve Ever Seen

Costa Rica is always beautiful, but during the rainy season, it’s like someone turned up the saturation on Mother Nature’s palette. The hills and forests are alive with rich greens, vibrant flowers bloom everywhere, and the waterfalls are at their most powerful.

When we were in La Fortuna, the scenery was absolutely magical. The air smelled so fresh, the trees were dripping with dew, and every shade of green imaginable surrounded me. It felt like I’d stepped into a real life fairy tale.

This is what the rainy season gives you: Costa Rica in its rawest, most vibrant form. The increased rainfall rejuvenates forests, creating a stunning backdrop for exploration. The dry season just can’t compete with the sheer lushness you’ll find during these months.

The Rain Isn’t Always What You Think It Is

When I imagined the rainy season, I pictured nonstop downpours that would keep me stuck in my hotel room all day. Spoiler alert: that’s not how it works. Most days, the mornings are clear and sunny, perfect for outdoor adventures. The rain typically rolls in during the afternoon or evening, lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours. We only had one day where it started raining during one of our excursions, and luckily there were multiple covered areas so it didn’t impede the experience at all!

And the rain? It’s not the gloomy, depressing kind. It’s more like a dramatic performance—thunder rumbling in the distance, heavy drops pounding on leaves, and then everything clears up, leaving behind a cool, fresh atmosphere. One evening, we hung out in the pool of our villa in La Fortuna, watching a storm roll over Arenal Volcano and feeling fresh rain drops on our skin. It was one of the most peaceful, awe-inspiring moments of my trip.

Fewer Crowds = More Pura Vida

If you’ve heard the phrase pura vida (which translates to “pure life”), you know it’s Costa Rica’s unofficial motto and way of life. During the rainy season, you’ll feel it even more because there are way fewer tourists around.

Popular spots like Manuel Antonio National Park, Tamarindo, or the hanging bridges in Monteverde are blissfully quiet. With fewer people, you get to experience the true essence of Costa Rica. The locals are more relaxed, the pace feels slower, and you have more space to soak it all in.

Rainy Season = Savings Season

The rainy season is considered the off-peak travel period, meaning fewer tourists. If you’re traveling on a budget (or just want to make your money stretch further), the rainy season is your best friend. Hotels, tours, and even flights are often much cheaper during these months.

Plus, the deals don’t mean you’re sacrificing quality. You’re still getting all the amazing food, incredible experiences, and warm hospitality Costa Rica is known for—just at a fraction of the price.

The Best Time for Wildlife Watching

If you’re a wildlife lover (and let’s be real, who isn’t?), the rainy season is prime time for spotting Costa Rica’s incredible animals. The forests are alive with activity, and the rain brings out species you might not see during the dry season.

The increased vegetation and availability of water sources attract animals, making it easier to spot a variety of wildlife, including birds, mammals, and amphibians. We saw several kinds of snakes, frogs, sloths, birds, and other animals!

Oh, and did I mention sea turtles? During the rainy season, beaches like those in Tortuguero and the Nicoya Peninsula become nesting grounds for these incredible creatures.

Incredible Waterfalls and Rivers During Costa Rica’s Rainy Season

Waterfalls are at their most spectacular during the rainy season, cascading with greater force and creating impressive displays. Rivers also swell, offering exciting opportunities for white-water rafting and other water-based adventures. If you’re into surfing, the rainy season is where it’s at. The waves are bigger and more consistent, especially on the Pacific Coast, making it ideal for experienced surfers.

Rainy Days Are Perfect for Relaxation

Let’s be real: not every travel day needs to be packed with activities. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is slow down and enjoy the moment—and rainy days in Costa Rica are perfect for that.

One particularly rainy afternoon in Arenal, we decided to relax in one of our resort’s hot springs. Sitting in a natural pool of warm, mineral-rich water while the rain fell gently around us was pure bliss. It’s these quiet, unexpected moments that make the rainy season feel so special.

Tips for Enjoying Costa Rica During the Rainy Season

If I’ve convinced you to give the rainy season a try, here are a few tips to make the most of your trip:

  • Pack smart. Bring a lightweight rain jacket, quick-drying clothes, and waterproof shoes. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
  • Start early. Most of the rain comes in the afternoon, so plan your outdoor adventures for the morning.
  • Embrace the rain. You’re going to get wet at some point, so just roll with it! It’s all part of the experience.
  • Ask the locals. They know the best spots to visit during the rainy season and can help you avoid any weather-related hiccups.
  • Transportation: Roads may become challenging in some areas due to rain, so it’s essential to plan for potential delays and consider transportation options accordingly.
  • Hurricane Risk: While Costa Rica is not often directly affected by hurricanes, the Caribbean coast is more susceptible. Visitors should stay informed about weather conditions, especially during the Atlantic hurricane season.
