Costa Rica, known for its diverse ecosystems, lush rainforests, and abundant wildlife, is a fantastic destination year-round. The best time to visit Costa Rica will depend on your preferences and the type of experiences you’re looking for.

Costa Rica’s weather is influenced by its diverse topography, which includes coastal plains, mountain ranges, and rainforests. The country experiences a tropical climate, but variations in elevation and proximity to oceans create different microclimates. Here’s a general overview of the weather in Costa Rica:

Dry Season (Mid-December to April)

  • Pacific Coast: The dry season is characterized by sunny and dry weather on the Pacific coast. Daytime temperatures range from 27°C to 32°C (81°F to 89°F).
  • Central Valley: Similar to the Pacific coast, the Central Valley experiences dry and warm conditions during this period.
  • Caribbean Coast: While the Caribbean side tends to be wetter throughout the year, it experiences a drier period during the dry season.
  • Activities: Ideal for beach vacations, outdoor adventures, and exploring national parks. It’s also a great time for wildlife watching as animals congregate around water sources.

Green Season (May to Mid-December)

  • Weather: The green season, or rainy season, brings more frequent rain, but it typically occurs in the form of afternoon showers. Temperatures remain warm, ranging from 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 84°F). I visited Costa Rica during the rainy season and still had an incredible time! The afternoon showers were quite predictable so booking your activities in the morning helps avoid most of the bad weather.
  • Lush Landscapes: The rain revitalizes the landscapes, turning Costa Rica into a lush and vibrant paradise. Everywhere we looked was so green and lush, and waterfalls are at their peak. The rivers are also fuller and more powerful, so if you want to do white water rafting, rainy season is a great time to visit Costa Rica for good rapids.
  • Surfing: The green season is an excellent time for surfing, as the Pacific coast experiences larger swells.

Transition Months (May, September, October):

  • Weather: May and the transitional months of September and October mark a transition between the dry and rainy seasons. While there might be some rainfall, it’s generally less crowded, and prices may be lower.
  • Wildlife: May is a fantastic time for turtle nesting on the Pacific coast, and the transitional months offer opportunities for seeing humpback whales on the Pacific side.

Hurricane Season (June to November)

  • Caribbean Coast: The Caribbean coast is more prone to hurricanes, especially during the Atlantic hurricane season from June to November. However, direct hits are infrequent.

Humidity

  • High Humidity: Costa Rica experiences high humidity levels, especially in coastal and rainforest areas. Be prepared for warm and humid conditions, particularly in the lowland regions.

Other Areas of Costa Rica

  • Central Valley and San Jose: The Central Valley, where San Jose is located, experiences mild temperatures year-round. Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 27°C (68°F to 81°F).
  • Mountainous Areas: In mountainous areas, such as Monteverde and Arenal, temperatures can be cooler, especially at higher elevations. It’s advisable to bring layers to adjust to temperature variations.

When Is Costa Rica Least Crowded and Expensive?

  • High Season: The dry season (especially December to April) tends to be the high tourist season, resulting in higher prices for accommodations and more crowded attractions.
  • Lower Prices: Traveling during the green season or transitional months can offer lower prices for accommodations and fewer crowds.

The best time to visit Costa Rica will depend on your priorities. If you prefer sunny and dry weather with a focus on outdoor activities, the dry season is ideal. However, if you enjoy lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices, the green season and transitional months might be a great option. Regardless of when you visit, Costa Rica’s natural beauty and biodiversity make it a captivating destination year-round!
