Chiang Mai, nestled in the mountains of northern Thailand, is the ultimate mix of culture, adventure, and chill vibes. Whether you’re into exploring ancient temples, playing with elephants, or just eating your way through some seriously good street food, this city has something for everyone. Here’s a rundown of my top things to do in Chiang Mai and what to know beforehand to make your trip unforgettable!

How to Get to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is located in the northern part of Thailand, about 700 kilometers (430 miles) north of Bangkok. The easiest way to get to Chiang Mai is to fly into Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), which has frequent flights from Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand, as well as international connections. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take the overnight train from Bangkok, which offers a scenic journey (and some serious old-school charm). Buses are another option, with both luxury and budget options available, though they take a bit longer.

Best Time to Visit Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is magical year-round, but the cool season (November to February) is hands-down the best time to visit. The weather is mild, the skies are clear, and the city comes alive with festivals like the Yi Peng Lantern Festival in November. March to May can get scorching, but it’s perfect for those who don’t mind the heat. The rainy season (June to October) sees fewer crowds and lush green landscapes, though you’ll need to dodge some downpours.

How to Get Around Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is super easy to explore, with plenty of options for getting around. Red songthaews (shared red trucks) are popular—they’re cheap and great for short trips around the city. Tuk-tuks are fun and iconic, but always negotiate the fare beforehand. If you’re comfortable, renting a scooter is a convenient way to explore at your own pace, especially for trips outside the city. Grab (Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber) is also widely available and super convenient. In the Old City, walking is the way to go—it’s compact, charming, and full of surprises!

Top Things to Do in Chiang Mai

1. Explore Doi Inthanon National Park

If you’re looking for an epic day trip from Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon National Park is a must-visit. Known as the “Roof of Thailand,” it’s home to the country’s highest peak and packed with stunning views, lush trails, and cool, fresh air that’s a welcome break from the city heat. You can explore beautiful waterfalls like Wachirathan Falls, visit the famous King and Queen Pagodas surrounded by colorful gardens, and hike the Ang Ka Nature Trail for a peaceful walk through the misty forest.

2. Visit Local Villages

After your visit to Doi Inthanon, visit local hill tribes and villages to learn about their culture and traditions. Places like the Karen Long Neck Village or Hmong communities offer a glimpse into a way of life that’s very different from the city. Just be mindful to choose responsible tours that respect the communities and their customs.

3. Visit an Elephant Sanctuary

If spending time with elephants is on your bucket list, Chiang Mai is the place to do it—but make sure you choose an ethical sanctuary. Look for places like Elephant Nature Park, where the focus is on rescuing and caring for elephants rather than riding them. You’ll often get to feed, bathe, and just hang out with these gentle giants while learning about their stories. Visiting an elephant sanctuary was one of the biggest highlights of our time in Thailand, and it’s definitely at the top of the list of the best things to do in Chiang Mai!

4. Sunday Market and Night Market

Chiang Mai’s night markets are legendary! The Sunday Walking Street is a must, packed with local crafts, jewelry, clothes, and some of the best street food you’ll ever taste. Can’t make it on Sunday? The Night Bazaar is open every evening and just as fun. I bought so many souvenirs and gifts for friends and family back home at the Chiang Mai markets, and I even had to buy a tote bag at the market to fit all of my purchases. Also don’t forget to try a mango sticky rice while you’re there!

5. Explore the Old City

Chiang Mai’s Old City is the heart of the city and the perfect place to soak up its history and charm. Surrounded by ancient walls and a moat, this area is packed with beautiful temples like Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, cozy cafes, and cute little shops selling everything from handmade crafts to colorful souvenirs. It’s super walkable, and there’s so many things to do in Chiang Mai’s Old City. You can spend hours just wandering through its narrow streets, stumbling across hidden gems and lively markets. Whether you’re snapping photos, grabbing a bite at a street stall, or chatting with friendly locals, the Old City has a vibe you won’t want to miss!

6. Try the Local Specialty, Khao Soi

You can’t leave northern Thailand without trying khao soi, Chiang Mai’s most iconic dish! This rich and creamy coconut curry soup is packed with bold flavors, featuring tender egg noodles, juicy chicken or beef, and crispy fried noodles on top for the perfect crunch. Served with lime, pickled veggies, and shallots on the side, it’s a dish that’s both comforting and full of spice. Whether you grab it from a street food stall or a local restaurant, khao soi is a must-try that will have you coming back for seconds (or thirds)! We had it nearly every day we were in the city and loved the variations we had at Khao Soy Maesai (honored with a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide for its good quality and good value cooking) and Kao Soy Nimman.

7. Day Trip to Chiang Rai

A day trip to Chiang Rai is totally worth it if you’re staying in Chiang Mai and want to explore more of northern Thailand! The highlight has to be the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)—it’s like stepping into a surreal work of art with its dazzling, all-white design and intricate details. You can also check out the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) with its bold blue tones and golden accents or visit the fascinating Black House (Baan Dam Museum), a mix of art, culture, and a touch of mystery. The drive is about three hours each way, but the scenery along the way is gorgeous, and many tours include stops at hot springs or the Golden Triangle. It’s a packed day, but trust me, it’s an adventure you’ll never forget!

8. Get a Massage

After all that exploring, treat yourself to a traditional Thai massage. Chiang Mai is known for its affordable and high-quality spas, so you can get pampered without breaking the bank. Zira Spa is one of the top rated spas in the city and is a great place to spend a few hours relaxing after running around exploring all the different things to do in Chiang Mai. Whether you go for a simple foot massage or a full-on spa day, you’ll feel totally refreshed.

9. Sample Thai Street Food

A street food tour in Chiang Mai is an absolute must for foodies and anyone curious about authentic Thai flavors! With a local guide leading the way, you’ll wander through bustling night markets and hidden food stalls, tasting everything from spicy papaya salad (som tam) and grilled pork skewers (moo ping) to the city’s famous khao soi. Along the way, you’ll learn the stories behind the dishes and discover local gems you might have missed on your own. It’s a delicious and fun way to dive into Chiang Mai’s vibrant food culture—and trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

10. Visit Chiang Mai’s Temples

Chiang Mai is home to over 300 temples, but if you’re short on time, hit up Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Doi Suthep is perched on a mountain with killer views of the city, and the golden pagoda is stunning, especially at sunset. It’s a bit of a trek to get up there, but it’s worth it. Be sure to wear breathable pants as your shoulders and knees will need to be covered when you visit temples in Thailand.

11. Enjoy the Cafe Culture

Chiang Mai’s café scene is next level. From artsy coffee shops to jungle-themed cafes, there are endless spots to sip a latte and chill. Favorites include The Baristro, Ristr8to, and Woo Café, which doubles as an art gallery and boutique. We tried so many amazing pastries and sweets as well as milk teas in Chiang Mai’s cafés.

12. Take a Thai Cooking Class

Chiang Mai is the perfect place to learn how to whip up some Thai dishes! Cooking classes here usually include a market tour, where you pick fresh ingredients, and then you dive into making (and eating!) classics like pad thai and mango sticky rice. It’s fun, delicious, and you’ll impress everyone back home with your skills.
