Weather Overview: Why December is the Best Time to go to Thailand

December is part of Thailand’s “cool” season (November to February), making it one of the most comfortable and popular times to visit. The weather varies slightly by region, but overall, expect clear skies, minimal rain, and pleasant temperatures that let you enjoy Thailand’s natural beauty without the intense humidity of the rainy season. Let’s break down the specifics by region:

1. December Weather in Bangkok and Central Thailand

  • Temperature: Around 24–32°C (75–90°F)
  • Rainfall: Minimal, with fewer than five rainy days on average
  • Humidity: Lower than the rainy season but still a bit warm

Bangkok experiences cooler temperatures in December, making it perfect for sightseeing without the sweltering heat. You’ll still likely sweat during the day from the heat (I definitely did!), but it cools down at night to become very pleasant. The festive vibe of the holidays also brings added sparkle, especially with the city decked out in holiday decorations.

2. December Weather in Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand

  • Temperature: Around 14–28°C (57–82°F)
  • Rainfall: Almost no rain
  • Humidity: Low

Northern Thailand is even cooler, with December mornings and evenings pleasantly chilly, especially in mountainous areas like Chiang Mai and Pai. It’s an ideal time for trekking, visiting pagodas and hill tribe villages, and attending festive events like the annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival.

3. December Weather in The Thai Islands and Southern Beaches (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui)

  • Temperature: Around 23–30°C (73–86°F)
  • Rainfall: Varies by coast (Andaman Sea vs. Gulf of Thailand)

While the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Islands) sees little rain, the Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) might have some showers but still plenty of sunshine. The seas are calm, making December a fantastic time for snorkeling, diving, and other water sports.

What to Pack for Thailand in December

The weather in Thailand in December brings cooler temperatures, but “cool” in Thailand still means tropical! Here’s a guide on what to pack:

  • Light Layers: Bring light clothing for the day (shorts, tank tops, dresses) and a light jacket or sweater for cooler nights, especially if you’re heading to the north. You can also easily have clothes sent to be laundered by one of the many laundry services available, so you can keep your clothes fresh. We used a local service midway through the trip and it was a lifesaver since our clothes were so sweaty from running around in the warm weather!
  • Swimwear: Essential for the beach destinations. You’ll want a couple of swimsuits if you’re planning multiple beach days. Be sure to also bring a cover up.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Perfect for exploring cities, hiking, and sightseeing.
  • Sun Protection: The sun is still strong, so pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Bug Repellent: A must, especially if you’ll be visiting jungle areas or going on evening adventures. I like to use both bug repellent and mosquito repellent bracelets for added protection!
  • Festive Wear: December brings in holiday festivities, so pack something a bit more stylish if you’re planning on celebrating New Year’s Eve in Thailand. While we were too tired to go to any of Phuket’s New Year’s Eve parties, there are plenty of nightlife options available if you want to celebrate!

The weather in Thailand in December is perfect for a wide range of activities across Thailand:

1. Beach Hopping and Water Sports

  • With calm seas and sunny days, islands like Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Lanta offer prime conditions for beach lounging, diving, and snorkeling. We loved our day trip to the Phi Phi Islands where we got to see the iconic Maya Bay on a private longtail boat!

2. Exploring the Cultural Heart of Thailand

  • Bangkok’s temples and markets are much easier to explore with the cooler temperatures. Don’t miss the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market. UNESCO Heritage Site Ayutthaya outside of Bangkok was also beautiful to visit. Make sure you wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders if you are planning to visit temples!

3. Enjoying Festivals and Events

  • In Chiang Mai, the end of December is a time for flower festivals and lively street markets, and the city’s cooler evenings are perfect for browsing. We loved visiting Chiang Mai’s Sunday market, and bought most of our souvenirs and gifts for friends and family here.

4. Celebrating New Year’s Eve

  • Thailand rings in the New Year with celebrations across the country. For an unforgettable experience, head to Bangkok for fireworks and street parties or celebrate on the beach at Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party. We stayed in a pool suite with an ocean view in Phuket that allowed us to watch the fireworks right from our room!

  • Book Early: December is peak travel season in Thailand, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. Make sure to book flights, accommodations, and tours well in advance. You’ll also likely pay more for accommodation during December since it is peak season.
  • Embrace the Festivities: While Christmas isn’t a traditional Thai holiday, many areas celebrate with decorations and events. The holiday spirit makes December especially festive, adding a unique charm to your trip. We loved seeing the holiday decorations around Bangkok and Chiang Mai!
  • Consider a Mix of Destinations: With cooler northern temperatures and sunny southern beaches, December is perfect for combining city and island experiences.
  • Respect Local Customs: December’s tourist influx doesn’t change Thailand’s cultural norms. When visiting temples, dress modestly, and remove shoes before entering sacred spaces.

Final Thoughts

Thailand in December offers travelers the best of both worlds: mild weather for exploring its vibrant cities and cultural sites, and sun-soaked days for lounging on pristine beaches. Whether you’re drawn to the bustling markets of Bangkok, the peaceful mountains of Chiang Mai, or the turquoise waters of Phuket, December’s ideal conditions make for an unforgettable Thai adventure. So pack your bags, book your stay, and get ready to experience Thailand at its most magical!
